Some backyards just don't work. The slope is too steep to mow, the ground stays bare and muddy, and you end up just ignoring the whole space. That's exactly what we were working with here - a large hillside behind a beautiful home that had basically been written off. Patchy dirt, pine needles, weeds, and no real way to get around the yard comfortably.
The goal was simple: make it actually usable. We installed artificial turf across the sloped area to create a clean, green surface that holds up no matter what the weather does. No more mud tracked inside. No mowing on an awkward grade. The turf stays looking sharp without any of the upkeep that real grass on a slope demands - especially in shaded, tree-heavy yards where natural grass almost never thrives anyway.
We also tied in large-format pavers and wide stone steps to give the space real flow. Getting from the lower level of the yard up to the home's ground floor used to be a chore. Now there's a clear, safe path that actually connects the space and makes it feel intentional. The stepped paver section along the side of the house ties everything together nicely.
What we ended up with is a backyard that matches the scale and quality of the home itself. The turf lays tight and clean along the base of the structure, the stone steps anchor the transition between levels, and the whole yard just feels put together. It's the kind of space you'd actually want to spend time in - not one you walk past and shrug at.
Steep, shaded, or awkward yards are actually some of our favorite challenges. If your backyard feels more like a liability than an asset, artificial turf combined with the right hardscape elements can change that completely. We'd be glad to walk through what's possible for your space.
